Three decades of England: How schools emerged

Known for teaching Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Jesse Jay, the British School, has led many students who would become superstars.

His former students are among the best artists in the world, both on and behind the scenes – but none of them would have come there if it weren't for the "amazing idea" of more than 30 years ago.

On June 30, 1990, a crowd gathered at Knebworth House for the Silver Clef Award concert. About 120,000 fans flocked to Hertfordshire Park on a stormy Saturday to hear "exciting" performances by stars like Pink Floyd, Phil Collins, and Tears for Fears.

The event helped raise funds to build a school - the UK's first free performing arts and creative arts school for people aged 14-19 - celebrating 30 years of education in honor of the Knebworth Concert.

"I remember reading it when I was away: free performing arts school?" "I'm not sure that's going to happen," said Stuart Warden, the school's current director.

"All these artists play to make the school, and it's amazing. Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin all gave up their time at school - it's been amazing."
Mr. Warden said, "When I got a job offer here, people said I shouldn't take it because this school is not well known and is a famous school. But this school was never famous."

It is comprehensive with a complete academic program along with the arts. Students do not pay any fees but are selected after an audition or interview.

Three decades after it opened, it has developed into a thriving place to nurture young talent and teach creative skills.

From notable alumni including Ella Eyre, Black Midi, and Rizzle Kicks to those behind the scenes in event production, digital design, and broadcasting, the impact on the UK's creative industry is "a big deal."
