The battle reaches the streets of Kyiv as the Russians attack.

There is evidence of war along the way. We just passed the remains of a convoy of four Ukrainian military vehicles, one of which is an anti-aircraft missile system. They were hit by a Russian missile attack yesterday. Smoke is still billowing.

The convoy appears to be on its way to Kyiv to become part of the city's increasingly pressing defense. It was destroyed about an hour's drive from town. Gaining control of the capital was crucial to Moscow and the success of the Russian invasion. But it may involve street fights. Such an urban war would mean heavy casualties for both sides.

So far, at around 9 am on the third day of the invasion, the city is firmly in Ukrainian hands. Ukrainian authorities said the situation in the city and its suburbs was "under control." Weapons and equipment are on their way from France to Ukraine, while western Ukraine is helping to combat advancing Russian forces.

President Zelensky tweeted that he spoke to French President Macron early Saturday as "a new day has begun on the diplomatic front." "An anti-war coalition is at work!" Mr. Zelenski. On Saturday, Macron posted a video that read: "The war will continue - we must prepare for it!"

Russian troops take over the first "important" city.

According to news reports described by Reuters, Russia's Defense Ministry has confirmed it has taken over the city of Melitopol as the first significant settlement since Moscow invaded Ukraine on Thursday. Melitopol is a medium-sized city almost the main Ukrainian port of Mariupol in the Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine. About 150,000 Ukrainians live in Melitopol.
