That's not my name: The Ting Tings discusses the resurgence of the "amazing" song on TikTok

2008 hit Ting Ting hit That's Not My Name found an unexpected new life on TikTok, where it has recently been used by stars like The Rock, Will Smith, Christina Aguilera, and Drew Barrymore to voice celebrity challenges.

When Katie White also Jules De Martino wrote "This Is Not My Name" at the former Salford factory, they didn't think it was special. "We thought we were still trash like before," recalls De Martino.

They certainly didn't expect to stay for 15 years. But they realized their weighty garage-pop song, in which White expressed his frustration at being belittled, was "one of those songs."

"We can admit that right now it's one of those songs we've heard in other bands from the past where we're like, 'Ah, that's still a fragile song,'" said De Martino, the duo's drummer. Vocalist and guitarist White added, "It never really goes away. There's always something going on in this world, whether it's a movie voiceover or a TV commercial or... what's that thing where everyone puts on cute clothes and pretends to be others?"

Masked singer?

"Yeah. I remember when we wrote it about a year or two later, our lawyer or our manager or someone said, 'You wrote one of those. You just wrote one: "We didn't quite understand, but I think we do now." Evidence that this was actually "one of the songs" emerged when it resurfaced on TikTok, first used by pet owners who added captions to their furry friends' nicknames and later by Hollywood actors and singers.

However, they have seen more activity than usual on their other social media channels. A week or two later, a friend said, "Do you know how many people are doing this? You really should see that," White said.

"And yes, we watched it, and it was amazing to see it grow."

De Martino added: "Our phones just turned on, and things are going crazy again. We saw it, and we loved it."
