Tanis: "First Dinosaur Fossil Linked to Asteroid Impact"

The skin-covered body is just one of many important finds from the Tanis fossil site in North Dakota, USA. But it's not just its beautiful condition that catches the eye – that's what this vintage specimen claims to be.

It is said that the creature Tanis was killed and buried on the day a giant asteroid hit the earth.

The day so many 66 million years ago when the dinosaurs' reign ended and the rise of mammals began.

Very few dinosaur remains have been find in rocks, even documenting the last few thousand years before the impact. It would be great to have a copy of the disaster itself.

The spent three years shooting in Tanis for the show which will air on 15 April and will be narrated by Sir David Attenborough.
Sir David will review the results, many of which are shown publicly for the first time.

Along with these feet are fish that inhale debris from the impact as it rains from the sky.

We see fossil turtles nailed to wooden posts; the remains of small mammals and the holes they made; horned triceratops bark; pterosaur embryos fly in their eggs; and what appear to be fragments of the asteroid impact element itself.

"We have so much detail on this site that it tells us what happened from time to time; it's almost like watching it in a movie. You see stone pillars, fossils there, and it takes you back to today," said Robert DePalma
