Sam Ryder will represent England at this year's Eurovision Song Contest in Turin, Italy. She is one of the most followed British singers on TikTok, with 12 million fans on the app. She will perform her song Space Man at the grand finale in May.
"I love Eurovision. I think it's an incredible privilege to be able to do that," he told Radio 1 Newsbeat. Italian rock band MÃ¥neskin won last year's competition in Rotterdam. Sam is competing after two years in a row in which England finished bottom of Eurovision.
"I do not want to let the stigma or fear of getting a certain place on the table keep me from doing something and being a part of something I love," she said. In 2021, James Newman's Embers record received a chilling "zero point," and Michael Rice hit rock bottom in 2019 with the ballad Bigger Than Us. As a result, the 2020 competition has been canceled.
The last time England made the top ten at a Eurovision final was in 2009 with the song "It's My Time" by Jade Ewan. However, due to its invasion of Ukraine, Russia was barred from this year's competition by the show's producers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Talking about singing Eurovision against a backdrop of conflict in Europe, Sam said he was trying to get back to the fact that "music is about sharing and connecting." "My only strengths are remembering kindness, gratitude for the opportunity, and empathy."
After last year's dire situation in the UK, management company Tap Music stepped in to find a new band for the UK. He was responsible for singers such as Eli Golding, Lana Del Rey, and Dua Lipa to date.
Sam was selected internally between Tap and the news, and Ben Mawson of Tap said ahead of Sam's election: "We don't want to see Eurovision as a boom or bust night for artists. Instead, we want to see this as a career development platform."
Who is Sam Ryder?
Sam garnered a massive following on social media during the first block after featuring a snippet of the song on TikTok. Justin Bieber and Alicia Keys have noticed her cover, and she is the most-watched British artist on the platform for 2020.
He started his solo career when he signed with the record label Parlophone in 2021. Sam says his love for Finland's 2006 Monstrous Rock winner helped Lordi represent England in the Eurovision Song Contest.
"Winning Lordi was a big moment in my life because I loved him before they competed at Eurovision. "Seeing them at the Eurovision Song Contest doesn't change how I feel about them, and I'm just happy to see this group represent their country and break it down."
