Sam Fender: the singer who would turn another British gift into a hand pump for a pub.

Singer Sam Fender says his second Brit Award will follow the first as a whimsical manual brew at a local pub. Indie rocker North Shields won the Best Rock/Alternative Vocalist award at London's O2 Arena ceremony.

Voted by his critics, 2019's rising star trophy resides at Low Lights Tavern in North Shields, where he worked and was discovered. MFender said the second prize would come together, so "every time we go out for a drink, we can get a winning trophy." Ahead of the ceremony, Fender told Radio 5 Live that he would be "better this time" because his band was with him.

"That includes my guitarist Dean - who has been my best friend since we were 12 years old - so it's an extraordinary night for the kids and me because we'll be doing it together," he said. "I kicked him [Dean] out of the band I was in [Elmo and the Cosmic Fridge] because he invited someone else to join the band, but that's my regret."

But he said he "mainly" wanted to win the category he did because fans voted for it. "For us, it just shows how passionate our fans are, how much they care, and how much they want to see our success," he said.

"For me, that's the most amazing thing."

Ed Sheeran won Songwriter of the Year, while Dua Lipa was voted Best Pop/R&B Artist by TikTok users. Fender said he donated his first prize to the pub "because that's where they found me" when he worked there at 18.

The bar manager at the time recognized Northeast music manager Owen Davis, who was celebrating another British win and asked Fender to get his guitar out. Fender was shocked, remembering his boss called him a "stupid kid" and "hit us on the head for playing guitar," he said.

After his win, he told Colin Murray on Radio 5 Live that he "honestly came here for the meat draw, and then I dated an Englishman."
