Rust: Police get a warrant for Alec Baldwin's cell phone arrest

  • Police investigating the deadly shootout on Alec Baldwin's film Rust set were ordered to search the actor's phone.
  • Cinematographer Halina Hutchins died, and director Joel Souza was injured when Baldwin tried to paint a gun in October.

Baldwin, 63, insisted he "didn't pull the trigger." A court issued the order in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Rust was filmed. It stated that "there may be evidence by telephone" that "could be material and relevant to this investigation."

Investigators have requested the confiscation of Baldwin's Apple iPhone, which is believed to be his. They want to see text messages, emails, web browser history, and other information stored on the phone.

It came two weeks after the star gave his first TV interview about the incident, in which he said he didn't pull the trigger but fired his gun anyway. Mr. Baldwin said he was told it was unlikely to be charged with any crime. The actor said he fully cooperated with the police investigation into the shooting.

No charges were brought against anyone. The lawsuit against Baldwin alleges that the script did not require him to fire a gun when he fatally shot Ms. Hutchins. Lawyers involved in the case described the behavior of Baldwin and the film's producers as "cruel" and accused them of violating security protocol.
