Platinum party at the Palace: Royals are the real stars of the birthday concert

Of course, in most pop concerts, the audience does not turn their backs on the stage. But it was no ordinary pop concert and no ordinary audience.

For most of the 22,000 fans who attended the Platinum Party at the Palace, the real star was the royal family.

Ten minutes before the show started, Prince Charles walked a short distance from Buckingham Palace to the stands and waved happily to the crowd, shouting, "Charles! Charles!" Charles! Sir! Sir!" And zoom in on their phone cameras to better look at the heir to the throne.

And when Queen, Elbow, and Duran Duran took to the stage, the audience craned their necks to see what was happening in the royal box.

Some even carried binoculars. The concert begins with a tribute to the Queen's love of humor - as she shares a pot of tea with Paddington, the Bear, in a pre-shoot, heartwarming skit. Soon after, Queen (the band) kicked off the music in style, embellishing We Will Rock You with military splendor, courtesy of Royal Marine Drummers.

"I rarely go to concerts," admits a man standing next to me. "Who's this?" another exciting moment was when presenter Lee Mack performed a dance act at the top of the Sigala charts. And when Jacks Jones takes the stage, the audience nods to his slick house pop beat or appreciation his opening song, You Don't Know Me?

Better-known artists have done better. Sir Rod Stewart was greeted heroically as he ran past Baby Jane; George Ezra's rifle evoked enthusiastic singing; and when Mack announced, "Go crazy, Duran Duran," the crowd agreed.

Other highlights include Elbow, which features One Day Like This with a refugee chorus from more than 30 countries, and American star Alicia Keys, who reworked her songs to empower women as a tribute to the reign of the king.

As she sings on the piano, the words "Power" and "Super Woman" are projected onto the facade of Buckingham Palace.

"Is this girl on fire?" asked the singer, introducing the song of the same name before saying, "Yes, Queen!"
