The Power of Jane Campion's Dog, the intense western film starring Benedict Cumberbatch, leads this year's Oscar nominations with 12 nominations. Olivia Coleman, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Andrew Garfield are UK nominees in the lead actor category.

Lady Judy Dench and Ciaran Hinds have been nominated for a supporting role in Sir Kenneth Branagh's "Belfast."

His black and white autobiographical film about a family in Northern Ireland during Troubles was one of the ten films in the Best Picture competition.

Sir Kenneth, who was also nominated for Best Director, said in a statement: "It is a long road from the streets of Belfast to the Oscars.

"Today, I think about my mum and dad and my grandparents – how proud they are to be Irish, how much this city means to them. You will be as impressed by this great honor as I am.

"With a personal story like this, it's a tough day for my family and our film family. Thank you to the Academy voters for their wonderful and generous recognition."

Sir Kenneth was the first nominated in seven different Oscar categories during his career. He already has a director, actors, supporting actors, adaptation screenplay, and direct nominations, but now he can add Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. However, he hasn't won yet.

With her nomination, Jane Campion became the first woman to be nominated twice for Best Director and in 1993 for Piano.
