On set, Alec Baldwin Fatally Shoots A Woman With A Gun.

Key Sentence:

  • A woman is killed and a man injured after actor Alec Baldwin fires a gun at a New Mexico film set in 19th-century west Rust.
  • Halina Hutchins, 42, photographed on set as Director of Photography. Alec Baldwin was rushed to the hospital by helicopter but died from his injuries.

48-year-old director Joel Souza took the man from the crime scene to Bonanza Creek Ranch in an ambulance.

Police say they are investigating, also no charges have been made. A spokesman for Mr. Baldwin, best known for his role as Jack Donaghy on the rock series 30 and for starring as Donald Trump on the sketch show Saturday Night Live, said the incident resulted in improper ignition of the gun, including blanks.

In a statement, a Santa Fe sheriff's spokesman said Baldwin had spoken to detectives. "He entered voluntarily and left the building after completing his interview," the spokesman said. The director, who worked with Halina Hutchins on the 2020 action film Archenemy, said his death was "unreachable. Mr. Baldwin co-produced the film and played his name, Outlaw, whose 13-year-old grandson was convicted of murder.

The eldest of four children, Mr. Baldwin, has starred in several television and film roles since the 1980s.

Hutchins hailed from Ukraine and grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle, according to his website. He studied journalism in Kiev and film in Los Angeles and was named a "New Star" by American Cinematographers in 2019. He was the cameraman for the 2020 action film Archenemy, directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer.

"I am unfortunate to lose Halina. And so angry that it could happen on set," Mortimer tweeted. The International Guild of Cinematographers said Ms. Hutchins was "devastating news" and a "terrible loss."

"Details are currently unclear, but we are working on learning more and supporting a full investigation into this tragic event," said Guild President John Lindley and CEO Rebecca Rhine. Police said sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Bonanza Creek Ranch, a famous filming location, at around 13:50 local time (19:50 GMT) after receiving a 911 call to shoot at the Rust location.

Incidents like Thursday's fatal shooting on the set of Rust are rare but not uncommon. Real firearms are often used in the shooting and are loaded with blanks - bullets that produce lightning and thunder without throwing projectiles. In 1993, Brandon Lee, the 28-year-old son of the late martial arts star Bruce Lee, died on set after being accidentally shot with a gun while filming a death scene for The Crow.

Later, the gun used previously fired the cartridge, which pushed the cartridge into the barrel. When an empty cartridge is then fired, the cartridge is removed and released. Responding to Thursday's news, Brandon's sister Lee Shannon tweeted, "Our hearts go out to the Halina Hutchins and Joel Souza families and everyone involved in the Rust incident. A gun should kill no one on set. Period. "
