Cryptocurrency analysts say that so far, at least $11 million (£8.2 million) has been donated to Ukraine's military efforts via anonymous bitcoin donations. Researchers at Elliptic, a blockchain analytics firm, claim that the Ukrainian government, NGOs, and volunteer groups have raised money by promoting their bitcoin wallet addresses online.
More than 4,000 donations have been made so far, with an unknown donor donating $3 million worth of Bitcoin to an NGO. The average donation is $95. On Saturday afternoon, the Ukrainian government's official Twitter account published the message: "Get ready for the Ukrainian people. They are now accepting cryptocurrency donations. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT.
He published addresses for two cryptocurrency wallets that raised $5.4 million in eight hours. Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Technology said the latest request for donations was to "help the Ukrainian armed forces" but declined to say how the money would be spent.
Elliptic founder Tom Robinson told the: "While some group funding and payments companies have refused to allow donations to groups supporting the Ukrainian army, cryptocurrencies have emerged as a strong alternative.
Is cryptocurrency the future of money?
On Friday, fundraising platform Patreon announced that it had closed the fundraising site Donate Alive, a Ukrainian NGO raising money for Ukrainian troops in conflict zones since 2014.
Patreon said the site violated company policy, saying in a statement, "We do not allow Patreon to be used to fund weapons or any military activity." Cryptocurrency fundraising is becoming an increasingly important part of the current conflict worldwide.
However, scammers also seem to be taking advantage of the current situation in Ukraine by defrauding unsuspecting consumers. According to Elliptic, at least one social media post was found that copied a legitimate tweet from an NGO, but the author swapped Bitcoin addresses, likely with one of them.
