Meat Loaf: What doesn't a love singer do?
Written byTimes Magazine
This is one of the greatest mysteries of rock music of all time. What doesn't Meat Loaf do for love? The late American singer's Grammy-winning power ballad I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) made its way to the top in 1993.
In 12 minutes of Wagner's melodrama, he's repeated this guarantee at least 30 times - but fans have long been confused about what he's not going to do. Be vegetarian? Pastor's bribe? Give a gun to a monkey? The star offered one possible answer during his cameo in Spice World: The Movie.
The star was asked to clean a clogged toilet as the Spice Girls driver on their tour bus. "Listen, I love these girls, and I would do anything for them," he told his manager. "But I do not want to."
Ho and really, ho.
After Meat Loaf's death at the age of 74, the intrigue surrounding the song's meaning has resurfaced - but the answer to this rock riddle is much more straightforward than you might think.
In the lyrics, Mr. Loaf says she won't move forward or make love or stop dreaming of the object of her affection (referred to as "Mrs. Loud" in the song, she is British singer Lorraine Crosby).
Every time he says "I Wouldn't Do That," his goal is to rule out the possibility of certain future offenses. Although fans might be surprised by the chorus, Jim Steinman wrote the song - which he repurposed from Bonnie Tyler's Getting So Excited.
When we recorded it, Jim mentioned it he said, "People wouldn't know what it was," recalled Matt Loaf in 2014. "I said, 'Of course, they know. How could they not know?' He said, 'They won't know.'
Steinman is right.
"What happens is I keep getting these questions," Meat Loaf told VH1 Story Tellers in 1998. "I'm sure if I said 'Do you have a question,' people would raise their hands and ask me?" 'What's that?' "Well, I'm here tonight to help you," he continued, pulling out a giant whiteboard with lyrics and illustrating the syntax with a pointed stick.
"I would never forgive myself if we didn't go all the way tonight / I would do anything for love / But I wouldn't." "I'll never forget how you feel right now / I would do anything for love / But I wouldn't do... what?
