Maradona: Medical staff to be tried over football legend's death

Eight paramedics are facing trial for criminal negligence in the death of legendary Argentine footballer Diego Maradona.

A judge ordered a murder trial after a medical commission found Maradona's treatment was riddled with "errors and irregularities."

After his death, Argentine prosecutors launched an investigation into the doctors and nurses involved in his treatment.

Last year, a panel of 20 experts investigating his death found that Maradona's medical team had acted "inappropriate, inadequate and reckless manner."

He also concluded that, according to the court's ruling, the footballer "would have a better chance of survival" with proper treatment in an appropriate medical facility.

Among the defendants were neurosurgeons Maradona and GP Leopoldo Luque, a psychiatrist and psychologist, two doctors, two nurses, and his boss. They all deny responsibility for his death.

The eight are being tried on the legal definition of involuntary manslaughter, with the knowledge that it could result in the death of a person.

The crime can carry 8 to 25 years in prison under the Argentine penal code. A date for practice has not been set. Mario Bodri, a lawyer for one of Maradona's sons, told Reuters the football legend was "in a helpless situation" at his death.

"Once I saw the reason, I said it was murder. I fought for a long time, and here we are, the phase ended," he said.

The lawsuit was sparked by two of Maradona's daughters filed a complaint. They expressed concern about their father's care after brain surgery.
