Luxury car in smoke after a ship catches fire.

Thousands of Porsches and Volkswagens have been left on a cargo ship after it find fire in the Atlantic Ocean en course to the United States. The ship, named Felicity Ace, was en route from Emden to Germany before it caught fire off the coast of the Portuguese Azores.

German newspaper Handelsblatt reported that the ship had 3,965 vehicles on board, including Audis, Lamborghinis, and a small number of Bentleys.

The Portuguese Navy said no one was injured in the fire on Wednesday, and 22 crew members were taken to a hotel then the Navy, four merchant ships sailed in the area, also the Portuguese Air Force completed the evacuation.

"The ship's owner, Felicity Ace, has contacted the logistics agency to draw up plans for the ship's recall," the fleet said in a statement.

"So far, no sources of pollution have been registered. According to Handelsblatt, an interioremail from Volkswagen USA said the ship had 3,965 VW, Porsche, Audi, and Lamborghini vehicles on board.

Volkswagen has not assured the number of cars, but Porsche says it has about 1,100 models. 

The company tell it was "aware of an incident in which a third-party cargo ship transported Volkswagen Group vehicles across the Atlantic." Bentley confirmed that 189 of his cars were also on board.

"We are toiling with the shipping company to get more information," a spokesman said.   

According to the Marine Traffic website, the ship was route to the Volkswagen factory in Davisville, Rhode Island. One customer wrote on Twitter that his Porsche was on an abandoned boat.
