Will Smith, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dame Judy Dench, and Troy Kotsur are among the nominees in the acting category. Western director Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog is a leader in this field, with 12 nominations at the awards ceremony.
But he faces competition for the best award, Best Picture, from Apple TV's Coda and Sir Kenneth Branagh's Belfast. Follow the action live on the News website starting at 11 pm BST on Sunday.
Favorites for Best Picture were The Dog's Power, starring Cumberbatch, and the adult comedy The Code, about the growing pain of the only member of a deaf family who can hear. To add extra allure to the races, the former is a Netflix movie, while the latter is purchased and distributed by Apple after Sundance premieres - and the two are vying to be the first streamer to win the grand prize.
This week, Netflix global film director Scott Stubber told BBC culture editor Katie Razal that winning would be a "dream."
Sir Kenneth, whose film Belfast is based on his childhood in Northern Ireland at the start of the unrest, will seek to end the clashes on Sunday.
Will Smith has been awarded best actor in several early decisions and looks set to repeat his Oscar success. However, the 53-year-old was there twice when he was nominated for Ali and the Pursuit of Happiness. This year, he is a third-time favorite as the father of future tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams in King Richard.
He met Cumberbatch, Andrew Garfield, Javier Bardem, and his "mentor" Denzel Washington. Smith told People that Washington told him at the last Screen Actors Guild Awards, "This is your year." The biggest night lies ahead
