Singer-songwriter-actress Hazel O'Connor is said to be recovering from a "brain hemorrhage," her sister said. The singer, best known for 80s hits Eighth Day and Will You, was hospitalized on January 9 after discovering he had fainted at his home in France.
He was placed in a coma for 24 hours, and his brother Neil O'Connor said he was getting better and better. "Everything is pointing to a recovery, but it will take time," he said. "We all thought it would be more devastating than it looks now."
The star's two friends broke down her door and found her on the floor after she failed to show up for a meeting, O'Connor told CWR. Doctors thought he might need brain surgery, but after he was transferred to a larger hospital, experts found that his bleeding had subsided, he said.
He added that the first day was "just a touch and a start," but since coming out of the coma, his sister started learning motor skills again, including swallowing. "He's responding to photos, looking at photos of his dog yesterday and smiling, so things are moving in the right direction," he said.
The singer is playing her only show for 2021 in her hometown of Coventry as part of the City of England Cultural Festival. His February to June tour dates have been pushed back, including the Breaking Glass 40th Anniversary tour he starred with Phil Daniels and Jonathan Price.
Ticket holders have been told to wait for further messages from their management team. Mr. O'Connor said the outpouring of support for his sister was "amazing," and the family was "truly grateful" for the public response. "I hope one day Hazel will be able to read all this news herself and see the reactions that are coming from all over the world."
