Dame Patricia Routledge the celebrated actress and singer who became a global icon as the magnificently snobby Hyacinth Bucket in the beloved sitcom Keeping Up Appearances lived a rich and exceptionally varied career that spanned over seven decades on stage and screen Born Katherine Patricia Routledge in Birkenhead Cheshire in 1929 she was an artist of uncommon versatility a trait she was modest about but which defined her work in musicals Shakespeare and modern drama Her early years were spent studying English at the University of Liverpool before training at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School marking the beginning of a lifelong dedication to her craft.

Before the cultural phenomenon of Hyacinth's insistence on "It's Bouquet" Dame Patricia was a distinguished star of the stage finding significant acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic She made her professional debut in 1952 at the Liverpool Playhouse and her West End debut in 1954 Her talent as a singer and actress led her to Broadway where she won a Tony Award in 1968 for Best Actress in a Musical for Darling of the Day a feat that cemented her reputation as a formidable presence in musical theatre Acclaimed composer Leonard Bernstein was so impressed he later penned solos specifically for her in his presidential drama 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Back in the UK she was an esteemed member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and won an Olivier Award in 1988 for her role in Bernstein's operetta Candide demonstrating her matery of both comedy and drama.
