Fact: David Perdue's new TV commercial tells two election lies at once
Written byTimes Magazine
David Purdue, a former Republican US Senator from Georgia, is seeking to oust incumbent Republican Governor Brian Kemp with a prominent campaigner indicted on false charges about the 2020 election.
Now, lagging in public opinion polls with direct primaries drawing near, Perdue is deepening its commitment to 2020 dishonesty by launching a television commercial that tells two election lies at once.
In an ad he also tweeted on Thursday, Perdue painted a negative picture of President Joe Biden's condition and later said, "Guys, it all started here when Brian Kemp sold us out and let the radicals steal the election." Perdue added moments later: "Enough. I'll make sure our election is never stolen again." Biden legally defeated former President Donald Trump, winning 306 votes to Trump's 232 votes (and more than 7 million of Biden Georgia's 11,779 votes, Georgian ballots counted three times, and no proof of voter fraud in Georgia or any other state, no even close enough to change the result.
Kemp formalized Biden's victory in Georgia in November 2020, noting that state law requires governors. Perdue did not explain how Kemp allegedly allowed the election to be stolen in the ad. A Perdue spokesman did not immediately respond to CNN's request for clarification on Thursday.
Months of false claims from Perdue
Trump has supported and passionately backed Purdue's efforts to return to Kemp for refusing to help him overturn his 2020 loss in Georgia. And Purdue highlighted his candidacy on trumped-up election charges.
Last year, Perdue joined Trump in attacking Kemp with lies to attack Kemp over a 2020 legal deal between the Georgia Republican Secretary of State and the Democratic organization, which revolves around giving voters the ability to fix problems with their lost ballots to resolve though Kemp was not involved in the solution. Perdue also attacked Kemp for failing to investigate a group of bulletins that Perdue had alleged was wrong, citing inaccurate statistics.
When asked about Perdue's support Thursday, campaign spokesman Kemp Cody Hall said in an email that Perdue had a "deplorable lack of self-awareness and a refusal to face reality." Hall said, "If anyone is responsible for last year's disastrous outcome caused by the Democrats' total control over Washington, it's the man who lost his Senate seat to John Osthoff." A Democrat defeated then-President Purdue in a January 2021 runoff and gained Democratic control in the Senate.
