Ukrainian leader: Russia must talk to us to end the war

It's Kyiv at 7.30 am. Ukraine's leader, Vladimir Zelensky, again addresses his citizens in a video speech. In both Ukraine and Russia, he urged Russia to stop firing.

"Russia sooner or later will have to talk to us about how to end hostilities and stop this invasion," he said.

"The sooner the talks start, the less Russia will lose.

He added that "we will defend our country" until the attacks stop.

Just last night, he warned of an intensifying attack on the capital. Ukrainian leader said he had no plans to leave the capital and knew he was Russia's number one target at the moment.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Russia launched a "horrific" rocket attack on Kyiv compared to Nazi Germany's attack on Ukraine during World War II. Meanwhile, there have been numerous reports of further explosions in and around the Ukrainian capital.

The Ukrainian military has released footage of an alleged street fight between Ukrainian defenders in the northeastern town of Sumy and Russian attackers.

With more than 260,000 inhabitants, Sumy is the regional capital less than 30 kilometers from the Russian border.

The head of the local administration, Dmitry Shivitsky, said a large Russian military convoy was heading west along the Sumy River towards the capital, Kyiv.

He added that the nearby town of Konotop was already under siege.
