Eurovision: Russia banned from participating in Song Contest 2022

Russia will no longer be eligible to participate in this year's Eurovision Song Contest, the European Radio and Television Union said. The EBU, which organized the event, said Russia's involvement could jeopardize competition "given the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine."

Russia launched an attack on neighboring Ukraine on Thursday night. In response, Western governments have tightened international sanctions. However, just 24 hours ago, the race said Russia would be allowed to take part, so this is a quick change in the position of the EBU.

This follows the announcement that the 2022 Champions League football final will be played in Paris after Russia was pulled out of the match after invading Ukraine. The Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix, scheduled in Sochi in September, has also been canceled. Earlier this week, Ukrainian TV channel UA: PBC asked the EBU to suspend Russia's Eurovision membership and ban it from the competition.

State broadcasters from countries such as Iceland, Finland, Norway, and the Netherlands have called for Russia to be excluded.

Finland said it would not send representatives to the Turin race in May if Russia participated. However, the EBU said it remained committed to "protecting the values of cultural competence that promotes international exchange and understanding, unites audiences, celebrates diversity through music, and unites Europe on one stage."

UK Culture Minister Nadine Doris tweeted: "Eurovision means freedom, unity, and respect between nations - seen and enjoyed by tens of millions around the world. "I am delighted that Eurovision is taking action and excluding Russia."

The 66th edition of Eurovision will be held in Turin after Italian rock band Maneskin wins the competition in 2021.

Maniza represented Russia at last year's Eurovision Song Contest with an ode to women's empowerment, Russian. Russia has yet to announce its participation in the competition, which it last won in 2008 with Dima Bilan as Believe.
