Pujara made his debut for Sussex and was sent off for six balls from 15 in his first half on day two as his side lost 174 with 56.3 over in response to 505 Derbyshire.
But the Indian put in a good showing in his second essay by hitting 201 instead of 387 balls unbeaten. The half was littered with 23 hits on the fence.
He conveyed a 351-run partnership with captain Tom Haynes (243) for the third goal to save the Sussexes, who were 513 for three with 176.1 over as the game ended in a draw.
The veteran left the test team after a draw in South Africa. Ajinkya Rahane was and overlooked for the home draw against Sri Lanka.
