Cristiano Ronaldo continues to be a polishing light in a disappointing season for Manchester United.

They scored 18 Premier League goals for the Portuguese superstar after converting a penalty in Monday's 3-0 win over Brentford.

Ronaldo and had a goal disallowed at Old Trafford for a slight offside as United saved one of their best arrangements of the season for their last home game. Bruno Fernandez and Rafael Varane _ making their debuts in English football _ are the other goalscorers. The win maintains - at least mathematically - the chances for sixth-placed United to finish in the top four also qualify for next season's Champions League.

However, United has just two games remaining and is five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal and three behind Tottenham, with both rivals having four more to play for.

Ronaldo, who has scored in his last four games, is third the league's top scorer after Mohamed Salah (22) of Liverpool and Son Hyun-min of Tottenham (19).

And he will be back again upcoming season, unlike some of the other players in the United team.

United fans praised veterans Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata when they were substituted in their last appearance at Old Trafford. It was also the final and last home game for interim manager Ralph Rangnik, who will be replaced by Eric ten Haag in mid-season.

Monday marks one year since United's home game against Liverpool was postponed as fans expressed anger at the Glaser family after the European Super League fiasco.

Fans have protested in each of United's last three home games, and anti-Glaser sentiment was evident before and during the win over Brentford.

It was the first game Brentford lost to Christian Eriksen as a team, and he was decisive in the London club's first competitive game at Old Trafford since 1975.

Anthony Elanga scored the first goal in the ninth minute, threw to the right, and focused Fernandez for a volley.

Ronaldo emerged as a handful, forcing David Raya to make an awkward save from a long-range free-kick, after which he angrily said there should have been a penalty after Mads Beh Sorensen's tackle.
