Consumers in the island nation say rice prices have risen to unbearable levels. The minimum price of rice per kilogram in the public market has already exceeded Rp 200-240, reports Colombo Pages.
The government was forced to restrict imports of several essential commodities, including food, which caused prices for basic items like as milk powder also rice to be much higher.
Although the Ministry of Commerce says rice is sold at preferential prices at Lanka Sathosa shops, some CWE shops have learned that imported rice is not meeting demand, Colombo Page said.
In addition, there are reports that Sathosa stores in many parts of the country are experiencing shortages of essential goods such as rice, dried peppers, and other goods. As a result, consumers urged the government to take steps to lower prices by importing rice or imposing price controls.
