Cheryl Sandberg, CEO of the parent company Facebook Meta, announced that she is leaving the company after 14 years.

Sandberg announced his departure in a Facebook post, saying he hopes to focus on the foundation and his future philanthropic work.

His departure comes as Meta faces declining ad sales and competition from competitors like TikTok.

"When I started this job in 2008, I hoped to remain in that role for another five years," wrote Ms. Sandberg, known as the influential company's vice-commander. "Fourteen years later, it's time to write the next chapter of my life."

Sandberg came to Facebook when it was a small company run by Mark Zuckerberg, a then 23-year-old who had dropped out of Harvard. A Google veteran, he helped grow his advertising business into a profitable powerhouse as the company grew around Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

Last year, the company news revenue of more than $117 billion and said more than 2.8 billion people worldwide use one of its apps every day. In addition, her books, including Lean In Women, Work, and the Will to Leadwhich she describes as "something out of a feminist manifesto"—have made her a global celebrity.

However, its immense power faded when the company was criticized for processing personal data connected with policy consulting firm Cambridge Analytica and targeted advertising and moderating social media posts.

Sandberg, who was initially in charge of Facebook's response, acknowledged some of these challenges in his post, writing: "The social media debate has changed beyond recognition since those early days.

"To say it's not always easy is an understatement. But it sure is hard," he wrote. "The products we make have a tremendous impact, so we have a responsibility to build them in a way that protects the privacy also protects people."
