Betty White: Biden pays praise to Golden Girls actress

US President Joe Biden paid tribute to lead actress and Golden Girls star Betty White, who died at 99. White's film and television career spanned eight decades. Biden called her a "beautiful woman" and told reporters, "99 years old - as my mother said, God, loves her!"

Admiration also poured in from the entertainment industry, including Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon, and Ryan Reynolds. "The world looks so different now," Reynolds wrote on Twitter about his partner in the 2009 film The Proposal and the woman he jokingly called his "ex-girlfriend" in media interviews.

"He managed to get old and somehow not old enough," he continued. "We're going to miss you, Betty." "I heard Ryan couldn't get over it for me," White told People ruthlessly for the December issue, "but Robert Redford was the one."

White's most famous role was the naive but attractive Rose Nilund in the sitcom The Golden Girls in the 80's and 90's. In 2010, he ended his ten-year career as the oldest person to host Saturday Night Live.

He was awarded an Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement - his eighth Emmy overall five years later. Other American stars have taken to Twitter to express their condolences and praise for their various comedic acting roles. We will miss him very much," tweeted Star Trek actor George Takei.

"I grew up with him, and I admire him. He is fun, brave, and intelligent," wrote Will & Grace actress Debra Messing, calling White a "national treasure." "What an amazing life," said Ellen DeGeneres, host talk show. "I'm grateful for every second I spent with Betty White."

Steve Martin remembers a chance encounter in 1974 when he tweeted musician Linda Ronstadt in LA to celebrate her 100th birthday.

She described feeling "excited" after White told her she and her husband Alan Ludden came to see her "because we heard you were funny."

White has also received online praise from actors Catherine Zeta-Jones, Viola Davis, Henry Winkler, and comedians Seth Myers and Conan O'Brien. "Rest in peace #bettywhite, our golden girl, our friend, and our neighbor," tweeted Walt Disney CEO Bob Eiger.
