Beijing criticizes Australia's decision to buy nuclear submarines from the United States

China's mission to the United Nations focused on the AUCUS deal, saying the nuclear plan "is a flagrant act that poses a serious risk of nuclear proliferation." Beijing has slammed Australia's decision to buy up to five nuclear submarines from the United States, accusing Washington and London of failing to meet their obligations as nuclear powers and signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The Canberra decision sparked international outrage. In a series of tweets Tuesday morning, China's mission to the United Nations focused on the submarine deal. He stated that "the nuclear-submarine cooperation plan ... is a flagrant act that poses a serious risk of nuclear proliferation, undermines the international non-proliferation regime, fuels the arms race, and undermines regional peace and stability."

Mission further said: “The irony of #AUKUS is that two nuclear-weapon states that claim to adhere to the highest standards of non-proliferation are supplying tons of weapons-grade enriched uranium to a non-nuclear-weapon state that possesses nuclear weapons, clearly a violation of target and Purpose of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
