Adele and The Weeknd have the most significant world hits of 2021

According to the music industry, Adele's hit album and weekly single The Weeknd Save Your Tears are the world's best-selling 2021 records.

Adele's long-awaited fourth album has sold more than five million copies in just two months, IFPI reports. In addition, it was the best-selling vinyl record and CD, the industry association added. The somber retro-pop ballad The Weeknd has since topped the charts in 18 countries and broadcast 2.15 billion times.

This is the 2nd year in a row that the Canadian star has presented the world's most famous song. Last year's leader Blinding Lights, made it into the top 10 for the second time in 2021, at number seven.

Canada also ranks second on IFPI's list of best-selling singles, thanks to Justin Bieber's collaboration with Australian singer-songwriter The Kid Laroi. His hit Stay is the only song to reach two billion streams in 2021.

However, Dua Lipa came close to third with her discount song Levitating, which attracted 1.88 billion views worldwide. IFPI's annual chart ranks downloads, streams, and physical purchases to compile the world's biggest hits.

The methodology tends to favor records from earlier in the year because they have more time to collect sales - and it's no surprise that the top 10 singles are released before June 2021.

Adele's album supports this trend. It beat the competition just six weeks after its release, a clear example of stellar appeal after a six-year absence. Another recurring album, Abba's Voyage, also entered the top 10 thanks to solid CD sales.

The Swedish pop legend, making a surprise comeback after 40 years of retirement, has the second best-selling album of the year - but slumped to number eight after streaming was turned on.

British artists are three of the year's top 10 albums, alongside Adele, Ed Sheeran, and Dua Lipa. Harry Styles' Fine Line Vinyl is the second best-selling album, while The Beatles' reissue Abbey Road is at number seven.

The three album charts compiled by IFPI (total sales, physical sales, and vinyl) "reflect the truly global nature of today's industry," CEO Francis Moore told the news, "with albums by artists from the UK, US, and Korea. South. Australia, Japan, Canada, and Sweden all showed up."

Adele's dominance over the trio, she added, "speaks of her unique talent for songwriting, her iconic voice, and her unwavering worldwide popularity."
