Nepalese authorities have handed over the bodies of 60 of the 72 people killed in a plane crash last week to their families, the airline said. on January 15 in the resort town of Pokhara, 200 kilometers  west of the capital Kathmandu. Of the 10 other bodies recovered, six have been identified and will soon be returned to their loved ones, and another four have yet to be identified. , airline   said in a statement Monday night. The ATR 72-500 twin-engine plane crashed into a ravine while approaching Pokhara International Airport in the foothills of the Himalayas.

The crash site is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) from the runway at an altitude of approximately 2,700 feet (820 meters). While it's still unclear what caused the crash, some aviation experts say ground-based video  of the plane's final moments suggests it stalled, though it's unclear why.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has also said the airport's instrument landing system will not be operational until February 26, eight weeks after the airport began operations in January.Aviation safety experts  said the absence reflected the poor flight safety record in Nepal, where mountainous terrain and the resulting changing weather conditions make flight conditions difficult.

The accident is the deadliest in Nepal since 1992, when a Pakistan International Airlines plane crashed into a hill trying to land in Kathmandu, killing all 167  on board. According to the Safety Matters Foundation, there have been 42 fatal plane crashes in Nepal since 1946
