A 1,000-pound meteorite crashed in southern Texas on Wednesday, a local US news channel reported. The meteorite was 2 feet wide and broke up as it passed through the atmosphere and landed near McAllen, Texas at about 6 p.m. KST. The same has also been confirmed by NASA, The Guardian reported.

While sharing more details, the agency's expert said the object was a meteorite "about 2 feet in diameter and weighing about 1,000 books"."The angle and velocity of entry, as well as the signatures in weather radar images, are consistent with other natural meteorites," government agency NASA said. They released a report on the incident along with a map showing the likely area for the meteorite to fall.

Taking to Twitter, the Brownsville National Weather Service wrote: "There have been reports of a possible meteor tonight west of McAllen. One of the satellite tools we use is Maps. geostationary lightning and it measures lightning as observed from space GLM detected a signal at 5:23 pm with no thunderstorms around.As reported by the Guardian, Hidalgo's Eddie Guerra also confirmed the news of the meteor impact in South Texas. He wrote on Twitter: "I have been informed by my federal partners that Houston Air Traffic Control has received reports from two aircraft that they have seen a meteorite west of McAllen. The exact extent of the impact is unknown.No reports of
damage in this area have been received."
